Solanum Xanthocarpum, popularly known as
Kantkari, Choti Katheri or Kateli in India is
a herb belonging to Solanaceae plant family.
This herb is found throughout India and widely
used in various herbal formulations. Kantkari
is one of the dashamul roots (ten roots) in
Ayurveda hence is an important herb in Indian
Medicine system. The whole herb is useful for
the treatment of different diseases and
disorders. The stems, roots, flowers, and
fruit are used in herbal medicines. |

The
root is diuretic, expectorant, febrifuge,
anodyne and frequently recommended for
coughs, dysuria, stone in the bladder,
dropsy, asthma, catarrhal fever, pain in
the chest, enlargement of the liver and
spleen. It also has high concentration of
solasodine, a starting material for the
manufacture of cortisone and sex hormones.
The whole herbis alterative, anthelmintic,
aperient, astringent, bitter, digestive,
diuretic, expectorant, stomachic and used
in the treatment of fevers, coughs,
asthma, flatulence, dropsy, heart disease,
pain the chest and gonorrhea. Fruits eaten
as an anthelmintic and for indigestion.
