Bael(Aegle marmelos) is a fruit-bearing tree
indigenous to dry forests on hills and plains
of central and southern India. It is
also popularly known as Bel, or Beli fruit,
Bengal quince, Stone apple, or Wood apple.
Bilva or Beal has been used very widely for
thousands of years in India. The roots are
astringent, bitter and febrifuge and are
useful in diarrhoea, dysentery, dyspepsia,
stomachalgia, cardiopalmus, seminal weakness,
vomiting, intermittent fever and swellings.

The leaves of the tree are useful as
laxative, febrifuge and expectorant, also
in ophthalmia,
deafness, inflammations, catarrh, diabetes and
asthmatic complaints. The fruits are used in
treating diarrhoea, dysentery, stomachalgia,
and good for heart and brain. The bark and
leaves are also used in medicated retention
enema. The root improves appetite and relieves
nausea. It is also used as a mild sedative.
The extract of leaves is used in diabetes
mellitus also and the oil from the tree is
used as ear drops.
