The history of topaz is 2000 years old
and dates back to the foundations of the Holy City of the New Jerusalem. Topaz is said to have been used in that holy city to protect
it against the enemies.
The historians are not sure about the origin of the name of the stone as there are different views if the name originated from the ancient Indian language Sanskrit or the Greek.
However the Greek name topazos' means 'green gemstone'. In the ancient Roman Empire the Greeks dedicated this stone to Jupiter. |

Mining and Excavation of Topaz |
|
 |
Mines of Brazil remain the main source of
Topaz production. However most of the stones are treated with
different technologies to get the wished colours.
The deep blue
color is possible only due to heating process but meanwhile it has
been largely accepted in the gem markets.
Not only that Blue
Topaz has become one of the biggest selling stone in some of the
countries including USA. |

Different Treatments to the Topaz |
|
 |
Gamma Cells: will produce both blue and yellow color. This technology is also used to achieve a brownish or brownish-green color. Yellow colour is less stable and disappears after the subsequent heating. The light blue colour is achieved by the gama Rays treatment. Gamma rays are used nowadays as a more like pretreating the Topaz to decide later which other treatments are to be given by higher energy techniques. The Blue Topaz stone who gains the colour this way is known in the Gem industry as “Cobalt Blue". |
|
Nuclear Reactors: In this technology the Topaz
stones are exposed to fast neutrons thus blue colour
is created. This procedure does not need any
subsequent heating. The Colour achieved is medium to
dark blue and this shade is available in the market by
the name of "London Blue". However sometime heat
treatments are applied to lighten the colour. The
stones which are made ready need months till they are
safe from the point of radioactivity. For these kind
of plants special permission from the Nuclear
authorities are necessary and licenses are issued by
the local government bodies.
Combination of
different Treatments: In a few
factories there is a combination of treatments
combining different technologies including the nuclear
and Gama rays in combination of heating process. By
applying a mix of these technologies different shades
are achieved. To name a few are: "Swiss Blue", "Max
Blue", "American Blue", "California Blue", and "Super
Sky Blue". "Electra Blue", "Super Blue", "New Blue"
etc. |
