Rose quartz is a type of quartz which exhibits a pale pink to rose red colour. The pink in the rose quartz can be almost rose red or in some African varities of the lavender colour. The rose colour is caused by the iron and titanium impurities.Recent studies have revealed the colour of massive rose quartz is due to microscopic mineral fibres.Rose quartz is used as an ornamental semi precious stone. As normally this stone is cloudy so it is used more for making beads and strings. Good quality stones are also popular as cut stones. Cabochons are used where colour is more important than the clarity of the stone. Rose quartz is also an important stone when it comes to make ornaments or statues. The color of rose quartz is due to trace amounts of titanium, iron, or  manganese, in the massive material. Some rose quartz contains  microscopic rutile needles which produces an asterism in transmitted  light. Recent X-ray diffraction studies suggest that the color is due to  thin microscopic fibers of possibly dumortierite within the massive  quartz.It is rarely found in crystal form. When it is, its colour is thought  due to trace amounts of phosphate or aluminium. The colour in crystals is  apparently photosensitive and subject to fading. Rose Quartz is normally not as popular as a faceted gem but more as  beads in strings because the stones are mostly cloudy therefore more  suitable for beads.
