Tourmalines are gems that offer a
variety of colours. As an ancient Egyptian legend states that on a
long journey from the centre of the Earth this stone passed through
a rainbow and thus absorbed all the colours. Even in today’s time
the Gemstones of Tourmaline are referred as Rainbow Gemstones. The name tourmaline originated from the Singhalese that is 'tura
mali'. If literally translated this would mean a stone with a
mixture of colours.Tourmaline Gemstones are available from red to green and from blue
to yellow. They often are available in two or more colours. There
are tourmalines that change their colour when the light is changed
from daylight to artificial light.Due to colour variations no two tourmalines are exactly same- this
quality makes this stone unique in colour, quality and suiting to
every mood. This gemstone has an endless number of faces, and for
that reason it suits all moods. Tourmaline is the name given to a group of related minerals
which have the same crystal structure but varying in
chemical composition and to some extent in their physical
Properties. |

Physical and Chemical properties of tourmaline
|
|
|
Tourmalines
are mixed crystals of aluminum boron silicate which is available in
different composition at the same time this makes this mineral group
fairly complex.Crystals of one colours are very seldom to find. The
color in tourmaline is due to the presence of metal ions (Fe, Mn,
Cr, V, Ti and Cu) in its crystal structure. Not only this but at the
same time the angel from which you look at the stone the colour may
vary again (so called dichoroism). Tourmalines have a good hardness
of 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale.According the there appearance the
Tourmalines has been given different name like the intense red is
known as a 'rubellite'. Some stones in the pink shades are also
called as pink tourmaline. Green Tourmaline are known as 'verdelite'
in the trade. Green ones are called 'chrome tourmaline'. The most
famous among the tourmaline stones is the 'Paraiba tourmaline',
which has intensive blue to blue-green and was discovered rather
lately in comparison to other verities of tourmaline
stones.Tourmalines of yellow colour are known as 'canary
tourmalines' in the trade. So many shades of the tourmaline stones
makes it a truly rainbow colour stone. Tourmaline with different
colours is known as bicolour or multicolored stone. Tourmaline also
have a quality of electrically charged when they are heated and then
allowed to cool – during this process the get charged negatively at
one end and positively at another end.Tourmaline also has the
quality to attract ashes & dust. In the olden time this stone was
also called therefore as ash catcher and is still being used in
Europe to clean smoking pipes. |
