Tanpura
is a chordophones from the lute family of
instruments. It is a long-necked drone lute that is
commonly known as Tanpura in northern India and
Tambura in the southern India. It is a four or six
stringed fretless instrument with a long hollow neck
and rounded body. Tanpura
come in different sizes, where the bigger one is known as
"males" and smaller one as
"females". There are three main styles of designing
Tanpura; the Miraj style, the Tanjore style and the small
instrumental version sometimes called Tamburi. It is
played by plucking the strings in a successive
manner. Due to its serene and delightful sound it is also
widely used in various areas other than music like,
meditation, yoga and alternate healing therapies. |
